Frozen Lake Ice Patterns
January 2024 | Lake Oswego, Oregon
The arctic air has made its way to Oregon and our hometown of Lake Oswego. For the first time in recent memory, the lake has frozen over, partly due to the draining of the lake. Walking our dog, Sherlock, along the path of the lake, I had the idea to take portraits of the patterns in the ice with a telephoto lens. I aimed to show their unique structures and give a sense of a chill while viewing the images. In my mind’s eye I saw each of these as unique, sometimes jagged but other times subtle, and most of all, a clear indication of the intense cold that has landed in our city.
As I walked down to the lake, I met a very nice lady who, seeing my camera, knew I was there for creating images. She was very kind to let me into her home along the deck to see the ice much closer than I would have otherwise. Thank you to her for helping make these images possible.
