An Image Tells a Story

Northern Lights Over Beaverton
An incredible moment as the Northern Lights cast their magic over Oregon.
Using the NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8 on my Nikon Z8, these are the images I created over this incredible weekend.
Frozen Lake Ice Patterns
The arctic air has made its way to Oregon and our hometown of Lake Oswego. For the first time in recent memory, the lake has frozen over. Walking our dog, Sherlock, I had the idea to take portraits of the patterns in the ice with a telephoto lens. I aimed to show their unique structures and give a sense of a chill while viewing the images.
Using the NIKKOR 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 on my Nikon Z8, these are the images I created over the cold weekend.
Eagle Has Landed
Today was a special day. Witnessing a bald eagle in our neighborhood and having the chance to photograph it will go down as one of my favorite moments in photography.
Morning Birds With Nikon Z8 and NIKKOR 400mm f/4.5 (2024)
I recently took my new NIKKOR 400mm f/4.5 prime telephoto lens to our local bird-flocking shore along the Willamette River. Combining with the NIKKOR 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, I wanted to see the performance of the new Z-mount lens vs. my NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6 PF lens on the F-mount. Let’s just say, the lens builds upon an already stunning F-mount predecessor… Click on the link below to see the gallery and my full review.
Lake Oswego Tree Lighting Festival (2023)
My hometown, Lake Oswego, Oregon, sure knows how to celebrate the holidays. The celebration was an all-day event, but with the tryptophan kicking in, we came later in the evening for the speeches by Mayor Joe Buck and other community members, the official lighting, and great music by the Lake Oswego High School Choir and Band. Here are some photos to relive the special evening.
Pendleton Grasslands (2023)
Along the I-84 highway, heading east from Portland, is Pendleton, Oregon. Known internationally for its “Pendleton Blankets” and the “Pendleton Roundup,” it’s a town of 16 thousand with a rich history of Oregon’s Pioneer days. While there, we had a chance to visit the Umatilla County Heritage Museum (link) and learned about the wheat-producing history and the geography that shaped the area.
These images are from those grasslands and show the terrain in the midst of a conflict between summer wildfire smoke and upcoming rain storms, darkening the sky.
As a bonus, a CBC Sunday Morning did a great piece on Pendleton’s tradition of making blankets. Here’s a link that starts at 16 minutes in: https://youtu.be/di1NyE9QWME?si=tuy6j7GQ5XdnIFuZ&t=961
The Rocks Of Smith Rock (2023)
Located in Central Oregon, Smith Rock State Park, has scenic views of deep river canyons, vigorous walls of rock, and birds flying above.
This collection focused on the textures of the rock walls. Bringing highlights to their texture, rugged form, sharp features, and deep colors. It provides these rocks their own portrait of a scenic area as an individual as part of the whole.
